New Tree, New Fruit
As we gather for worship, today’s sermon asks us to imagine a dying tree. Faced with its sickness, our first instinct might be to fix its appearance—to wire on fake leaves and make it look healthy from a distance. This is often how we approach our own sin, either through the exhausting work of religious performance or by simply ignoring the decay. The Law reveals that these efforts are useless; the tree itself is the problem. So, what is God’s solution for a tree that is rotten to the core? In our text from Galatians, we will discover that God’s cure is far more radical and freeing than simply helping us decorate a dying tree.
