The Only “Free Lunch” that Matters
As we gather for worship, our world reminds us daily that we must earn our keep. St. Paul, in our text, even instructs the Thessalonians to work diligently and warns against idleness. Our daily vocations are indeed God’s good design for this life. Yet, we do not come into God’s presence this morning presenting our diligence as payment. We come as weary sinners. We gather not on the basis of our work, but on the simple, powerful promise that “the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.” We come to be strengthened by a Word and a promise that cost us nothing. Let us quiet our hearts to receive the only “free lunch” that truly, eternally matters.
